How EMDR Helps With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and More

August 15, 2016

Have you experienced flashbacks or nightmares or any other symptoms related to past trauma in your life?

Well, I am here to help you by talking about an effective treatment option used during therapy sessions called EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing.

Although this approach is very effective for post-traumatic stress disorder, other psychological problems have been treated that includes addictions, eating disorders, anxiety, and panic attacks.

Watch this video to see how EMDR is done:

Exposing Repressed Fears Without Anxiety

As you just watched from the video clip in this newsletter, the client follows my fingers to mimic bilateral eye movements that occur during the REM cycle while sleeping.

Therapist using EMDR on PatientThe client also focuses on various aspects of a disturbing memory. The eye movements connect to bilateral stimulation in the brain.

Other forms of bilateral stimulation include sounds, vibrating simulation, or alternate tapping on the back of the hands.

The overall ending of this approach is that the client will expose the repressed fears and work through that in order complete safe processing without experiencing anxiety related symptoms.

EMDR allows the client to recall various memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation that allows the negative thoughts and emotions to dissipate.

The amount of therapists trained or certified in EMDR is very limited nationwide and especially in San Diego. If you are interested to be treated for the past trauma that is continuing to haunt you today, then please contact me.

And if my office is not close enough to you, then I can refer you to another EMDR therapist near you. Ask the clinician if they are fully trained in EMDR and if he or she is a licensed mental health professional before beginning EMDR.
