EMDR CARLSBAD
What Is EMDR Therapy?
Have you experienced flashbacks or nightmares or any other symptoms related to past trauma in your life?
Well, I am here to help you! For emotional or physical symptoms related to trauma, the most effective treatment option used during therapy sessions called EMDR, which stands for eye movement desensitization reprocessing.
This approach is very effective for post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as other psychological problems such as:
- addictions,
- eating disorders,
- anxiety, and
- panic attacks.
This process will require you to follow my fingers with your eyes to mimic bilateral eye movements that occur during the REM cycle while sleeping. During this portion of treatment, you will also focus on various aspects of a disturbing memory.
The eye movements will begin connecting to bilateral stimulations in the brain. Other forms of bilateral stimulations include sounds, vibrating simulation, or alternate tapping on the back of the hands. You have the power to decide which approach makes you most comfortable.
Why must it be addressed?
The majority of adults and children needing psychiatric services have a history of trauma.
A huge percentage of people with substance use disorders have traumatic stress symptoms that interfere with achieving or maintaining sobriety. A major percentage of adults and children in the prison or juvenile justice system also have histories of trauma-related issues.
There has been a tremendous research done showing the relationship between victimization and then becoming offenders. Many people with trauma-related histories have overlapping problems with mental health, addictions, physical health, and are victims or perpetrators of crime. Therefore, trauma-focused treatment, such as EMDR therapy, can help reduce traumatic stress and take steps toward universal precautions for creating the most optimal systems of care.
How EMDR Counseling for Trauma Can Help
When using EMDR therapy, I always ensure safety first while guiding you throughout the entire process.
The overall ending of this approach reaches a point of exposure in which the repressed fears are worked through to complete safe processing without experiencing anxiety related symptoms. EMDR will allow you to recall various memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation that enables the negative thoughts and emotions to dissipate.
EMDR sessions work amazingly fast. Processing even the most difficult memories can be achieved in a fraction of the time it would take with traditional therapies because EMDR can short-cut the process and go right to the releasing stage of unconscious thoughts.
